In this text, published as a chapter in the volume Ruling By other Means (CUP 2020), Danijela Dolenec and Daniela Širinić explore the relationship between veteran organizations and right-wing party HDZ in Croatia. Relying on newly collected PEA data, the authors establish relationships between the protest and the electoral arena, and argue that in the twenty years since Croatia's independence veteran organizations have been pivotal political actors, while the main marker of their mobilization in contemporary times has been to protect the status quo.
